The U.S. Senate Committee on Health,
Education, Labor and Pensions site not only looks good,
it utilizes a custom content management system to cut the
cost of maintenance, making your tax dollars go farther. |
Project:
Custom Content Management System
Role:
Consulting and Technical Design
The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor
and Pensions had a special need for its system; they
required a means to manage the ever-changing content
on their site while relieving the burdens on their IT
staff.
I conducted a series of consulting interviews with
the committee's Chief Clerk, the IT staff and various
committee staff members to determine their needs and
goals of the system.
Based on the results of the consultations I presented
the committee's Chief Clerk and IT department with a
proposed solution to shift the burden of data entry
and management onto the committee staff. Information
validity is maintained through a series of checks and
balances by Democratic and Republican staff members
approving each other's changes. Final approval and publishing
rights lie squarely in the hands of the IT Director.
The content management system removes the burden of
creating HTML, managing links and pasting article content
from the IT staff, while leaving them in a position
of control; having publishing and final approval authority.
